Abstract

1. At low impact pressing velocities, the compression of powder may be regarded as isentropic. 2. The good correlation found between ballistic and experimental evaluations enables the range of the required velocities to be theoretically determined with an accuracy of 10%. 3. A modified form of Kirkwood's equation of state quite accurately describes the impact compression process at loading velocities of 2–40 m/sec. 4. A comparison of density vs velocity, pressure vs density, and charge weight vs velocity curves obtained by calculation and experimental data demonstrates that the proposed method of calculation quite accurately describes, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the processes occurring during the pressing of metal powders.
