Abstract

The origins of the International Serials Data System (ISDS) are described. The early moves towards compatibility between the Guidelines for ISDS and the 1974 draft of ISBD(S) were undone in the latter's first standard edition in 1977. Concern by some national bibliographic agencies over creation of records to two different conventions and consequent dual processing were addressed by the ISDS Governing Board. The wholesale revision of the Guidelines and their Transformation into the ISDS Manual are detailed. Many of the original conflicts and discrepancies between ISDS and ISBD(S) have been resolved. Although perfect and absolute compatibility has not been achieved there is now a workable harmonization. The possibility of further improvements in accessibility of ISDS records is noted. Current usage of ISDS records in catalogues in several European countries is then briefly described.
