Abstract

A few years ago the design of cache memories was of interest only to those designing minicomputers or mainframes. Since the introduction of high-speed microprocessors like the 80386 and the 68030, systems designers have been forced to consider the inclusion of cache memories within their systems. Without cache those using the 80386 or the 68030 must either pay a considerable premium for high-speed RAM or suffer the effects of wait states with slower memory. Unfortunately, it is not easy to design and to implement cache memory, simply because of the high speeds involved. Various semiconductor manufacturers have produced components that considerably simplify the design of cache memories.
