Abstract

The authors respond: We appreciate Dr. Stang’s1 interest in our paper2 on the association of ischemic stroke with a decrease in temperature. As he pointed out, our tables show odds ratios based on the interquartile range of daily average temperature (17.4°C). We agree that it would have been more appropriate to express the odds ratios associated with a temperature change within a bound of daily variation (eg, 5°C). We have recalculated the odds ratios for 5°C temperature decrease; we present these results in Tables 1 and 2, which correspond to Tables 2 and 3 in the original paper.2TABLE 1: Association Between Decreased Temperature and Risk of Stroke by SeasonTABLE 2: Association Between Decreased Temperature and Risk of Stroke Onset by Risk FactorsWe made a mistake in the second paragraph of the “Results” section in stating that “confidence interval did not include 1.0 after 2 or more days after exposure.”2(p.474) It should be “confidence interval included 1.0 after 2 or more days after exposure.” We tried to comply with the policy of the journal Epidemiology3,4 by using the estimates of the odds ratios and their confidence intervals rather than statistical testing. It was not our intention to mislead readers. We trust that the additional tables will be useful.
