Abstract

Breath malodor constitutes a serious social, but also medically relevant, issue which affects a large fraction of the population. Unhappily the science of breath odor remains limited. Teaching of breath odor, and its potential diagnostic role, is often neglected in medical curricula. Recently, however, both the medical profession and the pharmaceutical industry have shown markedly increased interest. Besides epidemiological studies, therapeutic protocols and elaborate analytical methodologies are published monthly, which is heartening. Since so much money is involved there is a risk of too often promoting masking, rather than etiological treatment or diagnostic needs.
