Abstract

•Nitrous oxide has been used widely as a labor analgesic in Europe for nearly a century. •Nitrous oxide is patient-controlled, which enhances its appeal for women who want analgesic choices in labor. •With many years of anecdotal evidence from Europe, nitrous oxide appears to have little to no effect on either the neonate or the woman in labor.
