Abstract

The government's recent announcements for a universal childcare commitment have the potential to transform childcare services for children, parents and benefit communities across the country. The commitment – making all primary schools extended schools by 2010 by opening their doors from 8am to 6pm, and providing a childcare place for all school-age children – has finally put the out-of-school needs of children and parents in the spotlight.
