Abstract

What can you remember about uric acid and more importantly, is it more than just a waste product of purine metabolism? This is the subject of the comprehensive review of uric acid by Lario and Vincete in this month's issue of QJM . High levels of uric acid may result from a variety of causes, including diet, impaired renal excretion and excessive endogenous purine secretion. Genetic factors also play a role. The metabolism of uric acid is extremely complex and high levels are classically associated with gout, urolithiasis and nephropathy. Uric acid is also implicated in other disease processes including hypertension, cardiovascular disease and the metabolic syndrome.
