Abstract

There is a lack of conclusive evidence, theoretical or experimental, to establish the validity of universality in phase transitions on hierarchical and fractal lattices. The critical properties depend on so many details of the lattice that it seems quite unlikely that a complete or finite set of universality criteria exists. It is proposed that a distinction be made between a “strong statement of universality” and a “weak statement of universality.”
