Abstract
This paper argues that there is a paucity of fiction for children which fits the definition of science fiction as commonly accepted by adult science fiction readers; that much of what is marked as "science fiction" for children carries the trappings of science fiction but does not fulfill the cognitive demands of the genre; and that much that is currently written within the YA sf genre uses science fiction scenarios to deal with every day emotional issues, turning the child towards the family and socialization, rather than offering a challenge and directing the child outwards
