Abstract

In this issue of the journal, Kim and associates1 report on nerve growth factor (NGF) in tears after (LASIK). Tear dysfunction may, arguably, represent the most common unwanted sequela of excimer laser vision correction.2 Following LASIK, dry eye symptoms, such as dryness and foreign body sensation, are frequent. Studies show an increase in prevalence of dry eye symptoms from 38% preoperatively to 69% to 85% during the first few weeks post-LASIK.2,3 Ocular irritation scores can remain elevated for up to 12 to 16 months.
