Abstract

Whilst it is undeniable that the Specialty of OMFS arose from the brutal reality of two World Wars, it is less clear what that future may be. Set alongside a background of accelerated change in the nature of conflict, an uncertain world-order, diminished manpower, and materiel resource; there is the evolution of OMFS as a surgical discipline. Whilst few would argue that the retention of OMFS as an acute surgical specialty not only benefits our patients, but also conveys advantage to us as a professional body; the question of whether OMFS should remain a deployable military specialty is not often discussed outside military circles.
