Abstract

In patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), repetitive brief episodes of ischemia occur and may lead to a phenomenon similar to ischemic preconditioning, protecting the heart from ischemia. T2* weighted CMR is an emerging technique, providing oxygenation-sensitive images. It has been shown that in healthy volunteers, apnea leads to coronary vasodilation with a net increase of myocardial oxygenation. We hypothesized that myocardial oxygenation changes during apnea in patients with SAS are different from healthy volunteers.
