Abstract

Introduction/Objective: By 2020, 12 million people in the United States age 65 and older will need long term care according to the Health Insurance Association of America, and approximately 2 out of every 5 people in the United States will need to be placed in a nursing home in their lifetime (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, AHRC). Though many studies have linked patients' ethnicity and institutionalization rate, none have addressed the potential correlation between physicians' ethnicity and nursing home placement. Thus, we examined the association between physicians' ethnicity and attitudes towards institutionalizing a patient or a parent.
