Abstract

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER The answer is unclear. Overall, IUD users have a higher prevalence of BV (7%-47%) than other contraceptive users or no contraceptive users (2%-35%). However, many of these cases are asymptomatic and when race, baseline Nugent scores, and irregular bleeding are controlled for, the increased risk of BV with IUD use may disappear (SOR: C, cohort study and cross-sectional studies of mostly disease-oriented outcomes).
