Abstract
The cost of the James Webb Space Telescope could cripple US astronomy. Tony Reichhardt takes a closer look. The Hubble telescope is a hard act to follow. The task falls to the James Webb Space Telescope, named in recognition of NASA's administrator during the Apollo years. Due to launch in 2011, its original $1 billion price tag is likely to more than quadruple. With NASA's total budget shrinking, this will put other projects in jeopardy. It should be a wonderful telescope, but will it be good enough to justify the pain?
