Magee, N. H., Jr. ; Merts, A. L. ; Huebner, W. F. Abstract Numerical tests by Simon (1982) have indicated that an arbitrary increase (by a factor of two or three) in the contribution of a metal (with an atomic number greater than two) to the opacity leads to Cepheid models that, in some aspects, are in better agreement with observations than models using the standard opacity. It is shown that such a large increase in opacity is incompatible with atomic physics.
