Abstract

By using a dipole moment sum rule, we find that there is a relation between the hyperfine splitting, fine splitting, E1 transition rates and the scalar part of the quark—antiquark potential S( r) in the heavy quarkonium. Assuming S( r) = ar s , s>0, a>0, the latest data seem to indicate a weaker confining potential ( s<1), but can not completely exclude the linear confinement ( s = 1).
