Abstract
Summary: While conventional mass media (and fixed phones) have primarily supported centralized, formalized organizations , households and other supraindividual systems, cell phones increase the reach and capacity of decentralized, informal systems based on interindividual interactions, thus decelerating or even reversing very long-term evolutionary trends of human society: trends toward stable, depersonalized, formalized, complex and predictable supraindividual institutions.
