Abstract

Background: Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) has gained popularity due to improved aesthetic benefit, potentially less surgical trauma and decreased post-operative pain than conventional multi-port laparoscopic (CL) surgery. However, research using SILS in colorectal cancer surgery is limited and whether these expected benefits exist and / or outweigh the disadvantages e.g. longer operating times and increased costs (equipment and surgical training). The oncological safety of these laparoscopic techniques including lymph node removal and port-site recurrence also remains unclear.
