Abstract

The current UK strategy for decommissioning commercial nuclear power reactors is Safestore. This involves postponing the final removal of the facility until 100 years into the future, at which time the residual radioactivity in the structure-and therefore the hazard- is significantly reduced. This places an economic, environmental and social burden on future generations to deal with waste from something from which they have received no direct benefit. Therefore, is Safestore sustainahle?.
