Abstract

Survey results show a broad support for a common European defence policy. The causes for this observation, however, are ambiguous. Therfore, two competing hypotheses are tested: the preferences for common defence can be explained either i.) by public demand for security or ii.) by ideological factors. Using multilevel modelling, no empirical evidence is found that the Europeanisation of defence is driven by voters' quest for security. Instead, public opinion on common defence can be explained quite well by Europhilia and anti-Americanism.
