Abstract

Editor's Note. A ten-year experiment in the teaching of French in the elementary schools of Britain (ages 8 to 11), called the Pilot Scheme, was concluded in 1974. For further information on the Pilot Scheme, the reader is referred to Towards F.L.E.S. in Britain, Parts I and II, in The Modern Language Journal (Volume 56, No. 1, January 1972, pp. 13-20, and Volume 56, No. 2, February 1972, pp. 80-86). In the article below Mr. Buckby criticizes the report of the results of the Pilot Scheme, Primary French in the Balance by Clare Burstall et al. and published by the National Foundation for Educational Research (Windsor, 1974, 304 pp.).
