Abstract

Pre-operative colonoscopy screening is used to exclude presence of any lesions that could complicate anticoagulation after a left ventricular device (LVAD) implantation. Colonic prep needed for colonoscopy can be challenging and unattainable in patients with higher INTERMACS profile. The medical community hesitates in directly proceeding with LVAD therapy without getting a negative colonic evaluation. Aim of this study was to evaluate the necessity of a pre-operative colonoscopy prior to LVAD implantation in sicker patients. This is the first study to provide an answer to this important issue.
