Abstract

Nasogastric tubes have been subject to dogmatic use for many years; however, over the past several decades evidence from many studies has shown that the routine use of nasogastric tubes for gastric decompression is not necessary and in some situations is harmful to patients. When used intraoperatively for gastric decompression, nasogastric tubes should be generally removed at the end of the operative case. Although routine prophylactic use of nasogastric tubes is no longer recommended for most procedures, the nasogastric tube is still an appropriate therapeutic tool in cases such as intestinal obstruction, ileus, and the need for enteral access for nutrition.
