Abstract

At least while it is supported by the images obtained from the audio-visual host broadcaster (HB), it is imperative that the VAR understand in depth what the philosophy of football’s visual construction (VC) for live TV is. Following the theoreticians, bringing the staging of sports action to its best version on screen is a complex working technique that has been developed over decades, and that cannot be passed on to TV viewers without an ideological charge. The professional’s vision tends to magnify the spectacular side of televised football. The VAR has created a new mode in the football mise en scene (MES), which up until this moment only considered the ball in play or out of play. With the VAR it is necessary to use a process of VC to modify the MES, which is the main novelty. The objective the VAR pursues is normative, so it does not correspond to the planning and execution of the HB. In conclusion, the VAR needs a VC of its own, one that has a certain degree of autonomy, aided by the full performance of video technology. The HB offers different and complementary points of view to add evidence to the VAR decisions and, what is more important, a learning curve that should be taken patiently so that the VAR may develop its own visual construction technique.
