Abstract

The outbreak of coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) at the beginning of 2020 has changed human relations around the globe. This chapter describes the changes in the volumes and patterns of world trade since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the first month of 2020. Although the initial fall in world trade after the virus outbreak was remarkably severe, longer-term analysis of the data suggested that world trade was more resilient than expected in these initial projections. One interesting question is to study to what extent these shifts in global trade flows are expected to impact on global socioeconomic conditions. The chapter provides a description of the variations in global flows of trade, analyzing high-frequency estimates produced by the International Monetary Fund based on the United Nations International Trade Statistics Database data. It shows these variations with the modeling strategies developed recently to analyze the expected outcomes of pandemics.
