Abstract

A stochastic model for simulating a biennial plant population is developed. Results of simulation demonstrate that in variable environments delay of flowering can be profitable in two ways: by increasing population growth and by decreasing the rate of extinction. The variability of the environment is an important parameter that influences the optimal life-history strategy.
