Abstract

While the topic of industry-sponsored research is not new [ [1] Nathan D.G. Clinical research: perceptions, reality, and proposed solutions. JAMA. 1998; 280: 1427-1431 Crossref PubMed Scopus (0) Google Scholar ], it has been brought to the forefront with the recent lawsuit between Pacira Pharmaceuticals and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. This recent development was, in fact, the impetus for an invited Pro-Con paper published in this issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia [ [2] Sessler D.I. Alman B. Treggiari M.M. Mont M.A. Pro-con debate: interdisciplinary perspectives on industry sponsored research. Anesth Analg. 2023; https://doi.org/10.1213/ANE.0000000000006386 Crossref Google Scholar ]. This Pro-Con paper is cowritten by 2 anesthesiologists and 2 orthopedic surgeons and will be copublished in Anesthesia & Analgesia and the Journal of Arthroplasty. We took this interdisciplinary approach because the debate of industry-sponsored research is not unique to any single medical specialty and an interdisciplinary collaboration will provide a wider range of opinions. We should note that 4 authors of the Pro-Con paper have published more than 2,500 manuscripts (this is not a typographical error) and have been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), industry, private foundations, and other funding agencies. Pro-Con Debate: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Industry-Sponsored ResearchThe Journal of ArthroplastyVol. 38Issue 6PreviewNearly all new devices and drugs come from industry that provides two-thirds of the funding for medical research, and a much higher fraction of clinical research. Realistically, without corporate-funded studies, perioperative research would stagnate with little innovation and few new products. Opinions are ubiquitous and normal but do not constitute epidemiologic bias. Competent clinical research includes many protections against selection and measurement bias, and the publication process provides at least moderate protection against misinterpretation of results.
