Abstract

As in other western countries, the surgical disciplines in Germany are expecting a shortage in physician workforce, which might compromise the basic care of surgical patients. This shortfall is associated with a decreasing interest for German medical school graduates in surgical work and in the 'surgical way of life'. The lack of interest for graduates has been the object of recent discussions and is most likely caused by one or more of the following reasons: bad working conditions for German surgical residents in the hospital; poor quality of surgical training with limited future prospects for surgical positions; and the wish for a general change of lifestyle which would allow the residents more time with their families and free time to follow their own interests.
