Abstract

Scale symmetries are broken spontaneously, explicitly and anomalously in QCD. It is argued that as a result, there must be a pseudo-Goldstone boson of dilatations, a dilaton. The mass of the dilaton is estimated by Dashen's theorem, whereas its interactions with pions are obtained from a low-energy effective lagrangian. The dilaton is identified as the f 0(975) meson.
