Abstract

More than 90% of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients complain of foot or ankle problems at some time during their disease. A general upward trend in the percentage of RA-patients who experience foot complaints as disease duration progresses has been found. Also, an increase in deformities and forefoot joint damage with disease duration is reported. Foot function, expressed as pressure and gait parameters, appears to be of clinical relevance in studying the rheumatoid foot. It can be expected that a worsening in foot function occurs as disease progresses, but no studies are available supporting this hypothesis.
