Abstract

AbstractBulimia nervosa and alcohol abuse share a common diagnostic phenomenon: intermittent behavioral loss of control of oral intake. To determine whether these two disorders share common developmental mechanisms, we evaluated a series of 30 women with DSM-III R bulimia nervosa, 30 age-matched women with DSM-IIIR alcohol abuse or dependence, and 30 age-matched nonpsychiatric community controls for the presence of abnormal personality traits. Women with bulimia were as likely as women with alcohol abuse to display traits of DSM-III histrionic personality, but were less likely to have antisocial or borderline personality traits. This study supports some common and some distinct personality traits in bulimia nervosa and alcohol abuse. Clinical implications for diagnosis and treatment planning are discussed.
