Abstract

Summary Action research has long been a popular and prominent form of research in social science and education, but has only recently been used by health professionals and then almost exclusively in nursing. This paper outlines the development of action research, investigates how it is characterised, discusses whether it should be termed research and looks at its potential for use in physiotherapy. The similarity between some examples of action research and the quality or audit cycle is noted and the distinctions between the two processes are explored.
