Abstract

Introduction: Muscle weakness can contribute to impaired balance. Impaired balance is a risk factor for fall and sports-related injuries. Predictive simulation studies of balance control indicated a major role of ankle plantar flexor muscle (PF) strength relative to other muscle groups in recovering from balance disturbances. However, research into the association between muscle strength and balance has yielded conflicting results: from no association to a strong association. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to investigate the association between ankle PF strength and balance in healthy adults.
