Abstract
A personal perspective is offered on the current circumstances of children in England. It asks why children are important, whether they get a good deal and whether all is well with the health-related services that are provided for them. It examines how children and childhood have been valued over the centuries, focusing on the Victorian era and today. It reviews the opportunities to improve the lives and health of children and young people created by the current New Labour Government, and emphasises that change will only occur through effective advocacy at a local level for children and their services. Actions to consider will be discussed in a subsequent paper.
