Abstract

He Center for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Yakub Kolas Institute of Linguistics Minsk, Belarus The paper considers two theories on the appearance of the appellative pazbishcha ‘pasture' in Belarusian dialects against the background of its distribution within Slavic countries. An assumption is made about the reasons for a higher rate of the appellative pazbishcha in the formation of Belarusian microtoponyms as opposed to the synonymous and widely known appellative pasha.
