Abstract
Lichtenstein’s tension-free inguinal hernia repair is one of the few procedures which had stood the test of time in this rapidly evolving world. Dr. Lichtenstein and his colleagues from the Lichtenstein Hernia Institute have come up with this most popular technique in 1984 which has become the gold standard of inguinal hernia surgery. He has also popularized the plug technique of mesh repair for femoral and recurrent inguinal hernias. Apart for his professional achievement, he was proud of his civil rights work. He was the chief fund raiser and donor for the American Civil Liberties Union. Dr. Lichtenstein’s story is a best example for the young surgeons to bring their innovative ideas to practice against all odds.
