Abstract

The principal reason for including vineyard irrigation in a winery utilities reference book is to detail the relationship between winery and vineyard water supplies. Chapter 8 will outline the real benefits and the problems which must be overcome to successfully recycle winery process wastewater for vineyard use. It is important in understanding the overall concept of water recycling and reuse to see vineyard irrigation from the utility engineer’s perspective. It must be emphasized that the recycling concepts described in this chapter refer only to process wastewater, not to sanitary wastewater. The public health safety requirements are, for good reason, very conservative and restrictive for sanitary wastewater reuse and often extraordinarily expensive to achieve even on a large winery scale. Sanitary wastewater treatment and disposal will be discussed in detail in Chapter 8.
