Abstract

On the ground of linear Onsager theory, the important properties of nematic liquid crystals are treated. The most simple approximation based on Gyarmati’s variational principle gives better results than the widely used Ericksen—Leslie—Parodi theory, which is a special case of the one presented here. The relaxation time of a twisted nematic cell is calculated for small distortions and deviations from the ELP-theory turn out to be likely.
