Abstract

Purpose: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease and causes chronic pain and movement disorders in elderly people. The prevalence of knee OA increases with age, and >80% of women over 80 years of age show radiographic knee OA in Japan. However, all elderlies with radiographic knee OA do not require treatment of knee OA and approximately 30% of people with radiographic knee OA have knee pain and require treatment of knee OA due mainly to knee pain. But this does NOT mean that the remaining 70% of people with knee OA without knee pain requiring treatment have NOT knee pain.
