Abstract

Mossbauer data at various temperatures down to 4.6 K, together with wet chemical analysis and neutron activation analysis, enabled us to determine the site occupancies of iron and magnesium, and the ratio of the recoil-free fractions of ferric and ferrous ions, for the asbestiform riebeckite, crocidolite. The latter ratio, which was found to be 0.87 ± 0.07, instead of the generally adopted value of 1.0, is representative for all the crystallographic sites. Separate regions of validity were also derived for the recoil-free fractions in each of the M1, M2 and M3 sites of crocidolite. Based on these findings a systematics for the behaviour of the recoil-free fractions in amphiboles is suggested. A discussion is given of the derivation of such data by analysis of Mossbauer spectra and the significance of some inherent assumptions.
