Abstract

The controversy surrounding the report of the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding iron fortified formulas1 has stimulated us to submit the following further observations. It is evident that iron fortified formulas are efficient sources of iron. Equally well known is the fact that the incidence of nutritional iron deficiency is greatest in infants of lower socioeconomic groups. Providing these infants with iron supplemented formulas will effectively combat iron deficiency. However, despite an occasional comment to the contrary, it is our experience that the incidence of nutritional iron deficiency among infants in upper socioeconomic groups is exceedingly low.
