Abstract

RationaleThe American Pediatric Society recommends that iron fortified cereal (most iron unabsorbed) or meat (most iron absorbed) be introduced to breast‐fed infants at six months of age.ObjectivesTo assess the impact of recommended first solid foods for exclusively breast‐fed infants on gut microbiota and gut inflammation.MethodsNinety exclusively breastfed infants were randomized to 1 of 3 groups: iron fortified cereal (FeCer), iron fortified cereal with fruit (FeCer+Fr) or meat (M). Fecal samples were collected before introduction of study foods (4‐5.5 months) and 3 weeks after. Fecal iron was measured by spectrophotometry and calprotectin by ELISA. Gut microbiota were characterized by Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA (V4 region).<span style=”mso‐spa
