Abstract

Results of a recently reported low-temperature magnetic susceptibility study of MnFeF/sub 5/ x 2H/sub 2/O showed a transition to ferromagnetic ordering at 38 +- 0.25K. These magnetic studies have now been extended by Moessbauer spectroscopy to the temperature range 4.2 - 53K. The Moessbauer parameters for MnFeF/sub 5/ x 2H/sub 2/O did not show the transition below the critical temperature, T/sub c/, reported by other workers for Fe/sub 2/F/sub 5/ x 2H/sub 2/O; however, the quadrupole-splitting constant in the paramagnetic region of the spectrum was essentially the same as that previously reported for Fe/sup 3 +/ in Fe/sub 2/F/sub 5/ x 2H/sub 2/O. The magnetic properties of Fe/sup 3 +/ in MnFeF/sub 5/ x 2H/sub 2/O are very similar to those of Fe/sup 3 +/ in Fe/sub 2/F/sub 5/ x 2H/sub 2/O. 11 references, 4 figures, 1 table.
