Abstract

Due to its inherent sense of security and non-intrusive features, Iris recognition can be highly suitable for various authentication purposes. Moreover, the process involves applying different mathematical pattern recognition techniques to Iris images of individuals, where its intricate random patterns are regarded as unique and may be observed at a certain distance. Nowadays, Iris recognition plays a crucial rule in a number of organizations, for instance, government institutions, for various objectives, such as authentication and identification purposes. Furthermore, Iris recognition technique considerably increases the accuracy of personal authentication with respect to other biometric techniques. On the other hand, a large number of invasions can potentially weaken different biometric systems, in particular, the Iris-based systems are quite susceptible to direct invasions, for example, fake Iris presentation to a sensor, where one is attempting to access the system in place of a valid user. Therefore, due to its ability to distinguish a very large number of fake Iris samples, Liveness detection can be considered as the most appropriate and essential technique in order to reach a higher level of reliability in terms of Iris recognition. In this study, Iris Liveness detection is fully assessed to enhance the accuracy of different biometric systems using Iris images.
