Abstract

A new genus and species, Irinaia brenesi , are erected to designate a digenetic trematode parasite of a boat-billed heron, Cochlearius cochlearius zeledoni from Penas Blancas, Nicaragua, Central America. The new taxon is placed in the family Cryptogonimidae Ciurea, 1933. The new genus approximates Acetodextra , Pearse, 1924 in the shape and structure of the seminal vesicle, but differs from it in the following characters: 1) ventral sucker situated medially in the anterior region of the body; 2) genital atrium structurally more complex; 3) uterus well developed; 4) intestinal caeca shorter; S) vitelline glands medially and laterally extra-caecal, in six or seven groups on either side.
