COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITESThe Iridium mobile phone company last week pulled the plug on its $5 billion satellite fleet and will eventually send the 68 orbiting craft into fiery death dives in Earth's atmosphere. That means an end to electronic smog that clouded sensitive telescopes. The experience has steeled astronomers' resolve to protect important frequencies.
