Abstract Aperture spectroscopy and deep-CCD broad- and narrow-band images are presented for the new narrow-line Seyfert 1/Ring AGN: IRAS 03202-5150. Far-IR data are also used to analyze this object. Physical conditions are derived for the emission-line regions. We find optical spectral features characteristic of narrow-line Seyfert 1 AGNs, very similar to a prototype of this object: Mrk 359. We detect high-excitation emission lines (especially strong (Fe VII] λ6087 emission) and also broad faint Hα emission. The broad- band CCD imaging shows an outer ring, bar, and several possible companions. We detect several knots in the ring, and the two principal knots are located approximately in opposition and at the same distance from the nucleus. The narrow-band imaging shows that the nuclear Hα + [N II] emission is elongated mainly in the north direction. In the far-IR, we find very similar luminosities at 25 and 60 microns [very flat spectral index α(60, 25)], typical of the nonthermal emission of Seyfert 1/QSOs. The characteristics of this AGN are also compared with other ring and narrow-line Seyfert 1 AGNs. It is proposed that obscuration of the Seyfert 1 nucleus can explain the observed optical and far-IR properties of IRAS 03202-5150; and that internal forces (orbital resonances due to central bar and/or oval distortion) probably caused the ring.
