Abstract

Analysis of internal vibrations of the CF 3CO 2 − anion of the lithium trifluoroacetate dissolved in acetonitrile or dimethylsulphoxide shows a variety of associations. In dimethylsulphoxide solutions, an equilibrium is observed between free ions and ion pairs; in acetonitrile even at relatively low concentrations (10 −3 M) triple anion and aggregates are present, together with ion pairs and free ions. The structure of ion pairs and of the triple anion are discussed.
